The Seven Year Glitch

 Chapter 1

Drake’s Key, USVI

I expected to make a minimum of a billion dollars this week because of the Chairs, the highest stakes gamble on the planet where a player could lose their fortune or leave in a different physical body.

“Good morning to ya, Boss. Coffee black today?” Peaches asked in her soft island lilt. “Here’s the mail. The usual except for one letter. It’s on top.” Peaches was never subtle. If a letter was on top, she meant get to it now.

I noticed the letter was typed on a manual typewriter. “Boss, you will die before Sunday sunrise.” She was spot on and this note was straight to the point. “Any ideas?” Peaches was aware of everything there was to know here.

“Sure, Boss, always. We all love’s ya, but you got a couple of employee contracts to negotiate.” Her eyebrows were raised, a sign to pay attention.

Several top managers were due new contracts, and I hadn’t even started. Someone may be harboring a grudge because of previous contract terms. Someone may want to leave and kill me as a sweet goodbye. That tightness came to my chest, my natural response to assassination. “Bring me their contracts,” I requested.
